Champions in Our Eyes

Morehead High School's Jason Stewart and Rockingham County's Jeremy Thomas have been friends all their lives... Jason's dad Bobby and I worked together for many years. We both remember the days each others' sons were born, and we've watched them grow up into two fine seniors. The sport of wrestling has seen their teams go against each other in the spirit of competition many times, but the boys never wrestled each other.

At Rockingham County's 1999 Cougar Classic Tournament they finally met in the 189 pound Championship match. Two good friends in a fierce competitive match with dads on the edge of the mat, both wanting both kids to win, but it honestly didn't matter to either of us, they were both already champions in our eyes.

I remember during the match Bobby putting his arm around my shoulders while we both cheered both boys on. After it was over and both boys embraced each other in the center of the mat, they looked up and both came over to Bobby and me and embraced us. There the four of us were, dads and sons.... I'll remember that moment for the rest of my life.
